i've been playing piano for 9 years, since 9, and i want to know if it would be hard or easy to learn to play the guitar. i kinda wanted to for a long time but never seriously considered it. but now maybe. any thoughts?
Its a lot easier. Dude trust me I have been playing the piano for 13 yrs as of now and I started with the acoustic guitar then moved on to electric guitar from the last 2 yrs. I have found the guitar really easy to play. Actually believe it or not I find it easier to play the guitar rather than the piano a lot of times. I found that the guitar has more freedom when playing especially for Rock because it doesn't really need to be entirely structured music with the guitar, unlike the piano. Plus if you know a lot of the most used or all of the scales, chords, and blues scales already then thats a thumbs up for you because it only makes it easier for you to play the guitar. The one thing that I found a little difficult was getting used to the guitar, but even if you didn't know how to play the piano it would still be somewhat challenging. Another awesome thing is you can use the piano as a TOOL to help you play with the guitar, worked wonders for me btw. I suggest first learn how to play the guitar and read the chord charts (seen in sheet music for the guitar specifically, but you can also use it for the paino also) Practice, practice, and practice just like anything else until it becomes second nature to you and along the way pick up song sheets from some of your favorite artists and play along with or without playin the song on your iPod or CDs, this way you will learn what type of style of music you specifically want to play that suits your personality and moods and to develop an ear for it, whether it is Rock, blues, or whatever. Another thing to keep in mind is that the guitar is played more with intuition and emotion rather than the piano. Here is an awesome idea that I have already done- Look for the song sheet "Right Now" by Van Halen and get the song and listen to it and try to play both the piano and guitar (of course seperately you can record yourself playing the piano and then play it along with the electric guitar if a electric guitar is what you are geting…)
