I have no knowledge of piano and want to self teach. I heard from many people that this book was to be the best. What is the difference between this one and adult basic level 1. They looked similar to me.

There are several courses available. Alfred's is one of the better ones, though not really geared toward self-teaching. It is nice specifically because it isn't geared toward 5-7 year old kids.
Typically there are several concurrent volumes at work with lessons. One on theory, one on technique, and one with songs, melodies, harmonies, and other music to play, and perhaps some supplemental material for filling in what the basic course lacks. Things that your teacher would want you to focus on.
… This looks like it's fitting all the parts into a single volume.
