Hello I'm very passionate about learning the piano and possibly pursuing a career as a performing musician(piano). However I have no previous experience other than toying around with a keyboard at my home. Is it even possible to do this since you have to audition to become a performance major? Say could I take lessons and general piano classes at college to get my skill level HIGH enough to then audition and major in performance? How long would it take to become proficient enough to audition and major in performance? Suggestions and answers from performing pianist majors is greatly appreciated, thanks.
I believe you should get together with a couple of piano majors and find out what the requirements are. I am not trying to discourage you, but it would be a good idea to get a realistic picture of what you are thinking of attempting. This is a good first step, and I hope you get some comments from piano majors (I was a guitar major who played piano in Both of the Jazz Bands) but some face to face time with a few piano students, as well as a professor or two would be helpful as well. Most schools also hold weekly recitals. Go to a few and listen. There is almost always a piano major in the lineup, and if not, there will be one in a week or two. You should get some idea of the proficiency required by listening to them play. I sincerely hope that you are still determined to go through with it after that, but it would be better to do it with both eyes open and a real game plan.
