Question by Keon: HELP?!?! My Piaaaanooooo ?
Ok Ok am 15 years old turning 16 this April and well you see i have a crush on this girl in my class. I don’t think she notice me or even know i like her. She can play the piano really really really good and i feel so proud of her and i really really like her music, her techniques, her personalty and the way she just feels the music as she is playing and when she would finish i will shower her with all sort of compliment but she is just too modest and just say its all not true, people are better. One day she told me that her teacher will be skipping her from the 6 grade till the 8 grade which i know is really good for her so i congratulate her as normal~ sometime i would introduce her to new classical songs which i think are nice and she would just say “thanks i will try it at home” while sometime she gives me some piano sheets and i would tell her the same thing. So i did the Craziest thing to get her to notice me! i joined a piano class last month to impress her with music she loves so much and now am on level 3 but my teacher says she is going to skip me to grade 2 after i finish the book because am already playing songs like river flows in you, canon in d, secret by jay chou, and others by my self without any help (all thanks to her piano sheets she has been giving me). Then i realized that i don’t have long till we both graduate and move on with our lives so i was wondering what is the quickest way to go to grade 8 in one year because i want to finish grade 8 together with her. Am thinking 2 months = 1 grade so by this dec i would be in the same level as her so that i could maybe one day play a very high level grade for her at school since i have never played the piano in front of her (don’t know how to play the piano and bad techniques). i wany to do this so badly because i don’t want to lie to her and say i know how to play the piano, i want to show her that i can and that i love music as much as she does. am taking baby step to get her to notice me. i just which life was easy like in the movies where the girl falls in love with the guy at the end. She has very many admirers in the school that does not know anything about her who occasionally “woo” her. I just think i don’t have a chance with her since she always talks about how perfect her future boyfriend is going to be and look like, and well lets face it, i just don’t look like anything she wants her future boyfriend to be so am guessing she is way out of my league. So that’s why i want to learn the piano because it is the closest and best feeling i will get. When i play the piano i can feel her guiding my fingers as press from note to note.
So my question is still how/what is the quickest way to go to grade 8 in one year?

Best answer:

Answer by cathrl69
Practice lots. However, there aren’t any magic answers, and it’s very unlikely you will get that good in one year.

Question by jack79: What is the quickest way to learn one song on the piano for my wife (for our 10th wedding ann. in 18 months)?
I’m willing to work at this and know that it won’t be easy. We own a keyboard. The song is one of her favorites–John Denver’s “For You” (http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtdVPE.asp?ppn=mn0066685). I’d like to do an “ok” job. My wife would be floored by that and would be emotional enough to not notice (or care) if I fumble a bit.

I’m open to paying for lessons but feel like my schedule won’t permit me to go through the typical learning process to the point of being able to play the song. For the pianists out there, please take no offense to my question. I know playing the piano takes a lot of work and this type of question could be seen as insulting.

Are there any good online or “at home” videos that could help me become familiar with piano basics and sheet music as quickly as possible–without getting bogged down more than I need to?

Any suggestions for an overall process to go through?
Any suggestions for a timeline or schedule?

Thanks so much!

Best answer:

Answer by Mordent
If you want to learn one piece of music you would be better off learning by ear.

Shock! Horror!

Yes, it’s true. Learning to read music is essential if you want to pick up something you don’t know and play it – like if you wanted to read a book. But if everything you ever needed to read you already knew, what’s the point learning to read (to read new things – which to save time, you don’t need to do!)

Now, it will not be easy learning a piece by ear. But it’ll be a lot easier than sitting down and learning to read music (which is just about as complex as learning to read words) If you could get the notes from the sheet music (for each hand, or each part) then you’re halfway there. You just need to match the letter names to the rhythms from the piece. Without a bunch of paper in the way you will actually give a far more convincing performance. Notice how concert pianists NEVER perform with music. The dots get in the way of the music.

Of course you’re unlikely to find a piano teacher understanding (or able!) to give you lessons on playing something entirely by ear – so finding someone who plays the instrument and asking for tips every few weeks would probably be better than having formal lessons.

With my personal experience – I’ve taught myself to play the guitar. Most of the time I don’t know what notes I’m playing, even though I’m an accomplished musician. Of course I COULD work them out, but I play entirely by ear and the shape of the chords – I don’t see the need to sit down and think “and this is an F# and this is a C” as I’m never going to play from sheet music.

I’m taking music lessons for the summer (13 yr old) and I don’t know which to pick!
I have an electric guitar with an amp at home, and I also have a huge piano at home which no one plays.
My fingers are relatively thin/long and my mom tells me that it’s better for the piano. But my friends are telling me that the guitar is better.

I wanna take both, but it’s probably like gonna be 5000 dollars, so obviously, I can’t!
I want to take piano….. mainly because it seems to sound nicer and doesn’t require you to strain your fingers.

I have somewhat good memory (im not flattering my self! lol), so it’s like 50/50 for both. I tested out both instruments before and I memorized all the main chords and some sharps and flats for the the chords on the guitar, and I memorized the 12 notes on the piano.

They’re both like equal to me!!

But the scales for both instruments are challenging, but gratifying to learn, so wtf?!?! It’s like, damn… I’m so stuck!

Please help! And give your opinions (don’t say piano is boring or guitar is cool or anything like that).

I listen to rock mainly, and would definitely like to rock out to songs, but piano is awesome too. I mean, wouldn’t it be cool to just play some Mozart or Bach effortlessly?

So yeah. Please help!!!!
Micah, you really convinced me to choose piano! But I don’t really know yet, I want to ask someone who plays both instruments and get their real opinions and reasons and such. It’s such a hard decision. I’m planning to stick with just that instrument this time, instead of just flying from one to another… (like I did with drums and flute…)

And I don’t mean to say playing Mozart and Bach effortlessly, I’m just admiring how other people get so good at it, it seems like they play it effortlessly. : )
And I’m aware that both instruments will give you a bit of pain in your hands (no pain, no gain!). I just think that the piano will be less painful than calluses from the guitar.
————————————————–
BY THE WAY, I have a lot of piano sheet music (like books and stacks) of them at home because my cousin has been playing it for 11 years.
I can play really simple tunes, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and other beginners stuff.

maybe you could do both. like i heard pianos have strings in them. so hook the strings up to your guitar. then when you strum the string it plays the piano. you could call it the guitar piano. i would do this myself but as i have no arms it is very difficult to strum the guitar strings. if i had enough money i would buy a replacement set of arms, but i think the only viable way to get money is through guitar piano. you can see the conundrum, of course.

This my latest attempt to create a lesson on a video. This time, as well as the audio, piano view, scrolling transcription, chords and annotations, I have added as a separate view the leadsheet I used that scrolls along in sync with the improvised piano. Because so much is happening on the screen, you may want to download a free, much clearer to view stereo version and the leadsheet from my website at

http://www.bushgrafts.com

Also on my instructional video (see details on my website) there is a printable pdf version of the transcription, and also a bass/drums backing track to play along with.

If you have a fast connection and want to see this in high quality video to see the notes clearly click on this – http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OqIwIr8HwR4&fmt=18
There are lots of versions of this song on youtube – most played in this key.
