Tips, Tricks & Piano Playin' Resources

How can I improve playing hands together on my piano?

Help! I’ve been playing piano for over 5 years and I still struggle playing music hands together… even after I’ve practiced both hands separately a trillion times! This is really frustrating.

Slow practice. Actually, really slow practice–much slower than you think. Find a tempo that you CAN do it hands together. The difficulty in playing with both hands is not just that you have twice as much to think about, but also that you have to coordinate which fingers line up together between the hands.

Use a metronome, set it to click a subdivision (like eighth notes) but REALLY slow at first.

Another method (which you should also do) is to take a very small amout of music and work it up to tempo. Take 1 or 2 measures at a time, and work them up to performance tempo. Once you feel comfortable, work on the next 1 or 2 bars, etc.
NOTE: it helps, if you’re doing 1 bar at a time, to practice the full measure + the downbeat of the next measure. That way you overlap your practicing, and won’t leave any little gaps in your practicing.
