Tips, Tricks & Piano Playin' Resources

How different is playing the ORGAN to playing the PIANO?

What are all those pedals for?

I play the piano, but I want to help out at my church, playing the organ.
Thanx

If you want to play the organ and you already play the piano, it shouldn't be too difficult to make the transition. You can actually play piano music on organ with no problem. Just know that notes will sustain by holding down the key and there is no sustain pedal. Also volume is usually controlled with a volume pedal. Eventually you will want to learn how to use the pedals and all the stops, but this is not necessary to get started.

It will also depend on what kind of organ your church has. Is it a traditional organ (with pipes) or a digital organ? A digital organ often has "shortcuts" or ways to make playing easier. If it's a traditional organ, you will need to learn to use the pedals. They are bass notes played with the feet. Traditional organ music uses a grand staff (like piano) plus a third line in bass clef to play the pedals with the feet. You should also learn to use the stops (they either pull in or out or switch on or off like a light switch). They change the timbre of the organ sound.

I hope this helps.
