Since a child I have always enjoyed music and especially the piano. Money growing up and later school and work, didn’t help much in learning how to play. Now I am in a position that take the time to learn. I would like to try to learn on my own just to get familiar with the keys and then seek an instructor. How difficult is the piano to learn as an adult?
I think it depends on you. I started playing when I was 6 years old, and it really helped that I had natural talent and could play by ear without ever having a lesson. But knowing I was good (and wanting to play kickball instead) affected my desire to practice and I had almost no discipline. It drove my teachers (and my parents) crazy. I probably would have been a lot better at the piano if I had the discipline to practice.
So even the best players have to put in the time. I think as an adult, you have an advantage in that you actually desire to play and can understand that being good at anything takes time and dedication. If you have a background in music, love listening to it, can carry a tune or have a good ear, have a sense of rhythm, or just a really, really strong desire, you can do it. Taking a couple of lessons can’t hurt, as a good teacher will get you started on the basics. It gets pretty advanced, but once you have the rules down, a lot of it just boils down to logic.
