To be completely honest, some people are able to play piano by ear, some people aren’t. If you’re a musical learner or play other instruments, then it’s a great idea. But if piano is your first instrument and you’re completely new to music, and if you’re not a musical learner… playing piano by ear is probably not the best idea.

You’d best find a teacher that you can work with. They can help you learn to play by ear, and if you’re not a musical learner, can really help you learn sheet music. Eventually you’re going to need to know how to read sheet music anyway; not everybody can be a prodigy. I have known piano players that played by ear for years, but once they wanted to do something with their talent, needed to learn sheet music or completely forget about their intentions.

Good luck.
