Question by wabbit sniper: How to teach a 3 year old to play piano?
Well I work for someone to give piano lessons to kids and so far I’m faring pretty well… except for this one annoying 3 year old:
1) He’s not very cute. The first lesson, his mommy wasn’t there right next to him in front of his eyes. Started bawling his friggin eyes out so bad I got so nervous and everything… Don’t want that to happen again.
2) Attention span/amount of time he can concentrate: approx. 10-15 mins. I have to keep him interested in piano for about 30 minutes. Very hard to do. “Can I play drums now?” “Can I do guitar?” “I wanna do drums” “I wanna do guitar” “I’m done” “I dont wanna piano” “I’m done with piano” “Mommy I finished” (about 10 minutes into the lesson) – Last lesson, his mommy had to scold him about 4 times for not listening to me. The lesson before that he decided to improvise on his own instead of working with me. i.e. bang random notes on the piano, not paying one bit of attention to my constant poking and whispering and urging.
3) I’ve taught him do re mi one octave so far about 18 times in a row and he can’t get “re” when I ask him to play it.
In my opinion 1/2/3/4 year olds should not play piano unless they are really that good or want to be that good. That’s just my opinion. I’m no babysitting professional.
Any ideas on how to 1) Get him to quiet down and work without his mommy 2) Get him to concentrate for more than 10 minutes at a time AND 3) Have his developing brain, which supposedly is supposed to take in information extremely quickly, properly learn the darn notes?
I understand he is a 3 year old. I also understand that one of the reasons he can’t really learn is because he’s not fully interested in piano.
