Do you have any suggestions on some good ways to learn how to play the organ? And could you give me a description of everything you have to do to play the organ? Also, is the organ really harder than piano? I need some imputs and suggestions. Thanks.
First, get yourself an organ. If you already know the piano, you’ve got the basics covered, but it takes some getting used to. Since it’s not touch-sensitive like a piano, you have to learn how to finesse the volume pedal. Plus, with all of the drawbars, there are many different sounds you can achieve so you just have to play with it to find the right sound for the right song. If you get a Leslie rotating speaker for it, you also need to figure out when to have it spin slow or fast. There are also foot pedals for bass notes, but let’s save that until later. The cool thing about the organ is the unlimited sustain. It can do gospel, rock, funk, jazz, and whatever other styles of music you’re into. Here are some cats to listen to for some kickass organ playing:
Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Joey DeFrancesco, Ronnie Foster, plus some other more rockin’ bands like Santana, Mandrill, among others. Have fun . . .
