Tips, Tricks & Piano Playin' Resources

I'm in high school and want to narrow down options for my future career. Help?

Here are some subjects in school that i like and dislike, and some other things
I like: English, philosophy, thinking, reading, movies, talking to people, laughing, helping people, biology, cats, neurology, the brain, psychology, foreign language, knitting, sewing, playing piano, rock music, cosmetics and clothes(sort of), doodling, looking at others' art

I hate/dislike: math, all science except for the aforementioned branches, gym, superficiality, people suffering, ignorance, hate, greed, abuse, addiction, politics, manual labor, boring office jobs…

I am in Honors level courses at my high school, but i was wondering if my interests and talents correspond with my job choices? I want to be a psychologist, but I don't really want to take AP Calculus, even though i've heard many times that you need sciences and math to pursue that career. wouldn't you need lots of humanities-type courses so to better understand human nature, life, beauty, suffering? this is what i really like, but i also like the biology and neurology- those human-related types of sciences.
So these are the careers i'm thinking of and the qualms i have about each:
Pyschologist- but i'm not sure if i want to have a stuffy office and dress in boring clothes.. i want to be creative in my job, too. if only i could combine music and art into my practice somehow. i think of professional jobs and how boring they seem. i want to be myself, not become one of those stuck-up therapists who isnt down to earth and relatable to their patients. But i'd love to see people grow because of me and trust me and suffer less because of my time and effort, help people who couldnt have helped themselves.

psychiatrist- don't want to be clinical and detatched from my patients, only seeing them once in a while. screw this option.

writer- it's an unsteady job, sort of, being a novelist or writing for a magazine. i like debating, thinking, expressing my opinions and hearing what others have to say. what could i do with this and write?

social worker- i want to help families of abuse and addiction because of my not-so-distant past. but i'm not sure i would have the patience, the drive, the capacity for suffering and not know if my efforts were doing anything, whether i helped or not.

teacher- i'd like to shape the minds of kids who am like me- thinking and creative. not sure if i'd have the patience for kids younger than 15. i'd like to be a high school english teacher or maybe a college professor.

whether you have experience or not in these fields, help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

I'm in the same position as you. Honors classes, similar interests, and no idea what to do with my life.

It sounds like you want to be personal with your clients–
My mom is a social worker. It is a very hard job and can get really emotional. It will affect your family and the people around you, but at the same time it is wonderful. Since you like to help people, if you can handle the emotion I think you would do well with this. Then again, I don't really know you.

Teacher would be another very good option. If your grades are up there you'd be fine. And unless you were a college professor, you could get very personal with your students–think about it…if you do it right, it's like being in school again, with all the drama and gossip. So it's not too boring. You sound like you'd make an amazing teacher.

Honestly, I think being a writer is a bad idea. You're right–it is very unsteady and risky. But overall you should go with what you love, and if expressing your opinion and creativity is what you want to do, then go for it. It's all up to you. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to do.
