Tips, Tricks & Piano Playin' Resources

is it too late to learn piano at the age of 20?

All of my friends play at least one instrument, so I really want to learn. I have had little music education and I can’t sing well. I’m good at many other things like writing, math, sciences and painting, but it seems I don’t have a talent for music.

I plan to attend the beginning piano class this semester. Any suggestion on learning music at my age?

Absolutely not. Go ahead!
I was a flute student before going to Uni, and there I had to start piano for technical purposes, like harmony and counterpoint classes (at 18). It was one of the best experiences I had. I don’t know why, but piano gave me a very different level of satisfaction from what I had playing flute. I still play both, but when feeling for a musical break in my daily life, I always sit on the piano.
And now, years later, I’m starting to learn a Japanese instrument (shamisen)…go figure.
It depends on how much time you dedicate to the study, but in a year you could be playing pieces by J.S. Bach, which are fun to play and beautiful to listen to.
My only suggestions are: enjoy, don’t be afraid of the instrument and get a teacher which whom you feel comfortable.

BTW, I made the reverse road, and now I’m an engineer (and was scared of math and physics after spending years playing the piano)…so I strongly believe that science and music do indeed go well together .
