I only know how to play piano from reading sheet music and its really starting to get boring playing these really bad pop, ballad, jazz arrangements. I also play classical piano and that is really boring to. Should i start learning how to play piano by accompanying singers or learn how to improvise or jazz piano? Are these more fun to do than to play from sheet music?
From my experience, I would say you have to find the right teacher. I’ve been with the same teacher for 12 years and never once has she pressured me or forced me to play anything. I choose all my own music which is usually classical because I love it so much. Some people might say that you won’t get anywhere without the “occasional push”, but this isn’t true. I am playing very advanced music and I’m proud of where I am at. Of course we all go through the phase where everything gets a little boring and may feel like a chore, but if you are truly passionate about your playing, you’ll want to play. Some people just aren’t born with the motivation to play for sheer enjoyment. I personally have never accompanied anyone so I can’t give you any advice there, but if you give it a shot you might open a new door that will make you want to further your musical career. Jazz impov was never a strong suit for me, which is why I stick with classical, but everyone is different. I guess what I’m trying to say is find your passion, whether it be jazz, classical, or maybe not piano at all. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish when you’re passionate about something.
