Do You Want To Sound Like A Pro?

If you’re like most people who take piano lessons, you do! ?Whether you’re young or old or somewhere in between, you aspire to make beautiful music and… right away!

?You’ve probably heard the old joke: ? “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” asks the inquisitive tourist. ?”Practice, practice, practice!” replies the wise old responder.? ?But wouldn’t you much prefer to learn the secret to sounding good just for your own satisfaction and enjoyment? ??That’s probably why you take piano lessons… However, most piano students forget to pay attention to the very areas that would enable them to sound great!

?Do you do one or more of the following?

1. Ignore the timing by not counting or tapping your foot.

2. Play everything at the same volume.

3. Disregard the key signature and just start playing the piece.

4. Use too much pedal.

5. “Type” or bang the keys and disconnect one note from another.

6. Allow the accompaniment (usually the left hand part) to overpower or drown out the melody.

7. Listen to talk radio instead of spending some of your time listening to music.

If you recognized any of the above habits as things you do, congratulations! ?Now you know why you aren’t sounding like a pro yet.

(Parents: Have you noticed these traits in your children who take lessons?)

Obviously, you want to sound good! (And you parents want your kids to sound good, don’t you?) ??So instead of treating piano practice like a chore, here are seven ways to start you on the way to Carnegie Hall:

1. Pay attention to the timing: count or tap your foot.

2. Notice the dynamics (indications for differences in volume) and follow them.

3. Look at the key signature before you start to play and mark all of the sharps or flats if you need to.

4. Use the pedal with care. (Pedal changes are often marked in classical pieces, and should be made in songs with each chord change.)

5. Employ correct fingering as you work towards playing smoothly and connected (unless the music asks for staccato: detached playing).

6. Listen for the melody. Can you always hear it while you are playing?

7. Focus on spending some time listening to music every week. (With wonderful tools like iPods, MP3 players and the internet, it’s easy to find recorded versions of the pieces that you play as well as music that motivates and inspires you.) Give these suggestions a try. ?Start today. ?You’ll be surprised at how much better you sound!

5 Important Tips When it Comes to Starting Piano Lessons

Here is something that I’m sure you already know, music is a very important part of our lives. We listen to music for hundreds or even thousands of hours each year. It also does more then just please our ears, music is a huge part of the human development. Any parent will tell you that children at just 3 or 4 will already be singing or humming some song that they have learned. However, there is more then that.

Over a decade ago, there was an experiment done at the University of California at Irvine that was done by scientists. The experiment basically consisted of college students listening to Mozart, a relaxation tape, or just silence. Right after these listening sessions, the students took tests that involved putting together puzzles. The experiment found that the students that had just listened to Mozart had a huge improvement compared to those that just listened to a relaxation tape or silence. The reason this occurred is because it is believed that the music and spatial abilities (the ability to do puzzles) share the same pathway in the brain.

Many people believe that if you listen to more music, it will improve your brain and thinking skills. And based on this study, it seems like that could be true. Many people also want to learn a musical instrument. One of the most popular instruments to learn is the Piano. It has one of the most beautiful sounds and has been around for generations. So are you or your child thinking of taking piano lessons? Well first check out these 5 tips when it comes to piano lessons!

1: If you are going to have your child take piano lessons, ask yourself, is this something they really want to do? Is it your child’s dream to learn the piano? Or is it more of your dream? If it’s more of your dream, then you should take piano lessons! It is never too late to take piano lessons. Even people that are retired take piano lessons, and they become quite good at it! If you have any dream at all of playing the piano, then take those lessons! You won’t regret it.

2: Which instrument should you use for your piano lessons? This may sound like a stupid question, of course you want to use the piano for your piano lessons. However, what kind of piano? Or what about just an electronic keyboard? An electronic keyboard is much cheaper after all.

It is probably best to start with an electronic keyboard (unless of course you have a piano) and see how you do. If time goes on and you prefer learning the piano for just personal enjoyment, then there is nothing wrong with sticking with the keyboard. However, if you are becoming serious about your piano lessons then you should probably consider switching over to an acoustic piano. It is best to stick to acoustic pianos as opposed to the Spinet Piano. Not sure which is which? Well, the Spinet Piano is the one with the lower back. It’s better to purchase an upright piano which is called the Baby Grand Piano. The reasons include the fact that the action of the keys is better for the students hand, and it’s also sounds a lot better to the ear.

3: Don’t be afraid to ask around about a teacher you are considering taking lessons from! In fact, I encourage it! Try and find out about your teachers background. Where did they learn the piano? How long have they taught piano? Try to get in touch with current students of theirs? You can get a lot of information from them that will help you decide if this is the teacher for you.

4: Make sure to put a priority on your piano lessons schedule! By that, I don’t mean to fill up your schedule with piano lessons. What I mean is, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by things. Try and limit your other activities. This way when you take your piano lessons, you aren’t exhausted from a long day. You also aren’t rushing to leave the lessons to go to your next scheduled activity. Slow down! Learning the piano is supposed to be fun. It shouldn’t be just another thing to squeeze into your schedule.

5: Finally, make sure you are dedicated to learning the piano! Like I said in the previous tip, this doesn’t mean filling up your schedule with piano lessons. However, make sure to try to get a bit of practice each day. One thing I love to do is take a nice hot bath before bed, then get out and play the piano before laying down and falling asleep. It’s so relaxing, and I’ve found it to really help my skills. Consider doing this!

I hope these tips have helped you and given you helpful information. Remember, no matter how old or young you are, you CAN learn the piano. Have confidence in yourself. You can learn it, and you won’t regret it.

Can You Really Teach Yourself to Play Piano By Ear?

The piano is a beautiful instrument that normally takes years of tedious practice to master. Countless music teachers will spend hours on just teaching you the basics of where to place your fingers on the keys, how to read notes on sheet music, how to play chords and going over the musical piano scale. It can be weeks before you even begin working on a real song.

So, why do some people seek to skip all of that formal training in favor of learning to play piano by ear?

I’ll tell you why.

It’s because they don’t want to spend all that time getting to the good stuff. And, the good stuff is being able to play real songs from memory. I know from personal experience how long it can take to go over all of that basic music theory and practice lessons. I took traditional lessons for several years as a kid, yet, was never taught how to memorize a popular piece of music from just listening to a record or the radio.

And, that’s the problem with traditional piano instruction. Most people get really bored long before they’ve learned enough chords to play their favorite tunes. Even then, you’re told to play music from a boring list of songs that you could care less about.

Yet, you can walk into a church on any Sunday morning and find the church pianist happily playing away, even though they’ve never taken a formal piano lesson in their life. This proves that you don’t really need all of the formal training. You simply need to understand how the piano keyboard works, and where to place your fingers to come up with the right notes.

In fact, it can be downright fun to teach yourself to play piano by ear, because you won’t have to worry about music theory, or how to tell the difference between a whole note and a half note. All you care about is figuring out how to play the beginning, middle and end to one of your favorite songs. While others are suffering through dull scale practices, you’ll be slowly memorizing the melody to a song that you know and love.

In 2008 a website called ‘BuySellDomains’ listed the website for sale. (Even though it wasn’t!) and the domain fetched over $1500 dollars. After big complaints over the sale of the name, the owner told me that the man trying to purchase the website was now involved with the next big thing and that he was glad to meet him. Another point to make about 1001sheets.com is that is absolutely amazing and if you haven’t yet gone there, then you should, right now!

Play Chord Piano Fast With This Easy to Use Technique!

Techniques. Some of them are more useful than others. Especially when it comes to piano playing. What you’re about to learn is a special way of forming chords at the keyboard that will have you playing chord piano in no time.

It’s called the open position chord and it’s exactly what its name implies – a chord structure that covers more than 2 octaves of the keyboard and uses both hands right away.

The open position chord (or OPC for short) is not an easy chord position to master at first, but once you get it in your hands, you’ll be well on your way to playing chord piano.
Let’s take a look at how we might go about learning this new technique. Take a look at my free piano lesson “Reflections in Water.” Here we have 4 open position chords in the Key of C major. You’ll notice the play button along with keyboard diagrams. Listen to the OPC and notice the sound. It’s quite modern isn’t it?

Now take a look at the keyboard diagrams and familiarize yourself with this chord. Once you get a feel for this chord structure you’re left with how to use it. This is the fun part! What I did in the lesson “Reflections in Water” is simply to play the OPC’s and improvise melody using notes from the C Major scale. That’s it! That’s all that’s required to create your own unique music.

You see, learning the OPC makes it all the easier. Because you have such a wide note spread between your fingers, it allows you to make “more” music so to speak than if you were to use triads or closed position chords.

Even the audio part where I just play the chords is musical. Many of you want to learn how to play piano using chords. I suggest starting with the OPC because it gives you instant satisfaction on the keyboard!

7 Reasons Why You Should Learn To Read Music

1. Essential to communicating with other musicians.

Music is a language unto itself. Given that, how can you communicate if you cannot speak it? Ensembles, bands, choirs, opera, jazz all operate on the written notes first. Way before improvisation was the written note. Simply put, if you cannot read you will never be in any ensemble that requires it. WE could really stop right there.

2. Essential to understanding theory.

The theory of music is by necessity based on the written note. All of the structure of chords, melody, harmony and so forth can only be understood completely through the written note. I know you say well this is boring, but someday you will be so glad you started now.

3. Learn a song without any other reference. You will not have to replay the tape or cd a million times or learn from someone else. How many times can you try to learn from a cd or from someone else and not know if you got it right? If you can read you can go straight to the book and get all of the basic information on your own. This greatly speeds up the learning curve. You cannot learn from a book the particular way a band performs the song, but you can get the basis of the song and go from there.

4. Know the way the author of those songs meant for them to sound. This is very interesting I think. I have many times been very surprised to find out a song was written very differently than I have always heard it performed. Perhaps the performer left of the “intro” for example. “Georgia On my Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael for example. Nobody plays the intro. Also there are other examples. I know this example is an old song that many of you may not know, but the fact remains that just because you have heard it on the radio a million times does not mean it was written that way. It may be even better the way the author originally intended it! If you are a song writer I am sure you would want people to know the way you wrote it. Think about that for a moment.
5.Discover new music.

It is a wonderful thing to “find” music just because you are leafing through a songbook and you find something that really speaks top you. I have found many this way. These are songs that I absolutely love. I would never have known they existed without being able to read.

6.It is Fun!

It may seem a little hard at first, but so was riding a bicycle as I recall. In fact the first time my father let go from holding me on a bicycle I ran into a post and knocked it over! I rarely do that these days now that I have learned how. In fact there are days when I don’t knock anything over.

7. It will make you a better musician.

This may go without saying, but it really bears repeating. After all, don’t we all want to be a better musician? Of course we do. Are you prepared to discover new music, perform with people you might never have met otherwise, speak with authority about the origins and intent of a particular piece of music or composer? I think I know the answer. Learn to read music, you will not be sorry.

Beginners Can Learn to Play the Piano Online

You can start learning to play the piano right now, if you have an internet connection. Expensive pianos and ongoing piano lessons are no longer the norm. Anybody that has an interest in learning to play the piano can make a start thanks to the World Wide Web.

If you want to get some inspiration, then watch a good pianist at work or keyboard player, there are plenty of videos available on youtube to inspire you. When a pianist plays the piano well, the listener can be drawn in to a very different world created by the expressiveness of the performer. Learning skills in general can be improved when learning to play the piano and children can benefit from this at school. Piano lessons can also help to have a better understanding of science and mathematics.
It doesn’t have to be expensive
Piano lessons are now available to the masses not least because of the technological advancements of electric pianos and keyboards. Not too many years ago, if you wanted to learn how to play the piano your only option would be to buy an expensive piano. It’s easy to learn to play the piano online these days, and you can buy a used keyboard for next to nothing. You don’t have to spend a fortune when you are just starting to learn the piano or keyboard. An expensive piano is not going to make a lot of difference to a beginner.

Improve your hand eye coordination

When you read sheet music, eye to hand coordination comes in to play and this process will improve dramatically the more you practice. You may be surprised at how fast this improvement will be.

Choose your own practice time

When you take piano lessons with a teacher, you will normally attend once a week at the same time on the same day. If you learn to play the piano using a piano software course then you can choose your day and time of day when you have lessons. You can learn in the morning, afternoon or evening. You don’t have to wait for a particular day to have your piano lesson. Everybody has busy and quiet times so do more when you’re quite and take a break when you are busy. So if you don’t want to be tied to a teacher, online piano lessons is the way to go.

It’s already been mentioned that to learn to play the piano properly you need a piano and piano lessons. There is also a third crucial requirement when learning to play the piano and that is you. Even though the process is considerably easier than it was you still have to practice. A piano, piano lessons and practice equals a great piano player.
