Can You Really Teach Yourself to Play Piano By Ear?

The piano is a beautiful instrument that normally takes years of tedious practice to master. Countless music teachers will spend hours on just teaching you the basics of where to place your fingers on the keys, how to read notes on sheet music, how to play chords and going over the musical piano scale. It can be weeks before you even begin working on a real song.

So, why do some people seek to skip all of that formal training in favor of learning to play piano by ear?

I’ll tell you why.

It’s because they don’t want to spend all that time getting to the good stuff. And, the good stuff is being able to play real songs from memory. I know from personal experience how long it can take to go over all of that basic music theory and practice lessons. I took traditional lessons for several years as a kid, yet, was never taught how to memorize a popular piece of music from just listening to a record or the radio.

And, that’s the problem with traditional piano instruction. Most people get really bored long before they’ve learned enough chords to play their favorite tunes. Even then, you’re told to play music from a boring list of songs that you could care less about.

Yet, you can walk into a church on any Sunday morning and find the church pianist happily playing away, even though they’ve never taken a formal piano lesson in their life. This proves that you don’t really need all of the formal training. You simply need to understand how the piano keyboard works, and where to place your fingers to come up with the right notes.

In fact, it can be downright fun to teach yourself to play piano by ear, because you won’t have to worry about music theory, or how to tell the difference between a whole note and a half note. All you care about is figuring out how to play the beginning, middle and end to one of your favorite songs. While others are suffering through dull scale practices, you’ll be slowly memorizing the melody to a song that you know and love.

About the author: You can get started playing the piano by ear today. With just a little bit of instruction and this secret technique, you’ll be able to play a popular song in just 4 weeks.
How To Play Piano Chords

We all have dreams as we grow up. There are those that dream to be firefighters, nurses and sports players, but then there are those that want to dedicate their lives to playing music. Mastering an instrument that has up to 88 keys is perhaps one of the biggest challenges. Many people are drawn to playing the piano. One of the reasons why the piano is so admired is because of its ability to produce sounds of different styles and moods.

Many experience a real connection when playing the piano and even individuals that have just started learning how to play piano chords. Playing the piano is really just an extension of ones thoughts and creativity like a paintbrush to canvass. Piano players that struggle are the ones that don’t play with passion and feeling. It can be frustrating when you feel like you’re not making progress on technique, but practice is essential for success.

Even the most talented pianists began at the bottom and had to make their way up. It’s only through regular practice that these greats became who they are. Once you review how to play piano chords and know where to place your fingers mentally, it’s imperative to get on the keyboard or piano. Using the imagination to practice playing chords can help you to develop much more quickly.
Mental visualizations only really work if you make them vivid. See yourself sitting in front of a piano and feel your fingers on the keys. It’s no secret that the practice of visualizations is a powerful tool which is used by many professionals in various fields including golfers, soccer players, sprinters and musicians. The use of mental visualizations is an age old tool that has been used by anyone that knows how powerful it can be.

Make a habit of daily practice and apply what you learn from books. You may feel strange and clumsy when just beginning on the piano. However most new starters do. The more you get on the piano and play, the more you will comfortable and in time it will feel very natural for you. The point is to practice as often as you can and don’t be afraid to play. Everyone sounds bad when they first play the piano.

Electric keyboards are affordable and are absolutely fine to learn piano on. You can pick up cheap second hand keyboards to start out on. Although usually pricier, a keyboard with weighted keys is a better choice. Weighted keys can give the feeling of playing on a real piano in comparison to cheaper keyboards.

You will find that it’s much easier to switch over to a real piano when playing a keyboard with weighted keys. Synthesizer keys tend to be rather springy and feel a little mechanical which a lot of pianists do not like. There are a couple of pros to playing on a keyboard, even though playing on a piano is still the best.

For one, you can control the volume and even wear headphones; great for keeping the neighbors happy. They have built in metronomes which are essential for keeping rhythm and time. Electric keyboards require no tuning, which will save you from having to get a piano tuner. Another good point, is that keyboards are portable, making them easy to transport. A piano is still a better choice despite the advantages of a keyboard. Most pianists would agree that a piano is just incomparable.

How to Play On Piano Secrets

Learning a musical instrument is a pleasant part of most people’s childhood. Typically, school programs will at least introduce you to the basic instruments, like the recorder, the drums, the piano and the saxophone. You might even get the opportunity to play in the band or in the school orchestra where you can learn how to read a little bit of music and maybe even make some music up on your own. If you don’t have these school programs, you can still learn how to play on piano, as long as you have a place where you can do a little experimentation without bothering anyone.

The first thing you need to start learning how to play the piano is an actual piano. You might have access to an old upright piano that is located at your school or at a community center in your town. Also, some churches and hotels also have pianos that you can play as long as the owners don’t think you will be bothering anyone. If you can’t find a place where there is a real piano that you can play on, you should know that there are electronic keyboards that will serve the same purpose when you are first starting out learning to play. These electronic keyboards have the advantage of volume controls and earphone plugs so that you can practice even when your living situation requires that you don’t make a lot of noise.

Once you’ve figured out exactly how you will key access to a piano or keyboard, you can really start learning how to play the instrument. The first thing that you should do on your piano or keyboard is to experiment with what it feels and sounds like to strike the keys. If you are playing on a real piano, press every white key and every black key all up and down the octaves of the keyboard. Listen to the difference in the sound if you press them softly or if you strike them hard. This will teach you important things about the way the notes of the piano are arranged and how you can use your fingers to make them sound full of energy, or soft and creeping.

Now that you have a little bit of a feel for what it is like to actually make sounds come out of the piano, you should see if you can plunk out a little familiar tune, without music, just using your ears to tell you if the note is right or wrong. Start with a song that you know by heart and you have been singing for years. Many people choose to start with the Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star melody because it is simple and they can tell just by listening whether or not they have the song right. Try to guess which keys will play the next sound that you are listening for. This will help you to become more comfortable with the keyboard, and the location of the keys and sounds.

Best answer:

Answer by Pete K
Yes, vaguely. Why? Oh. You want to show it to
someone, eh? I see. Well, you might try going
to youtube.com; but, if they’ve got it, it might
not be all that easy to find, unless you know a
few very specific things about it. (Such as…
what the commercial was about. Well… good
luck.) — You will need it!

Where To Start In Learning To Play Piano

So you want to learn to play the piano? You can do it but no matter if you are 5 years old or 95 years old, it is going to take practice time and commitment from you to do this. Tehre is not a magic pill you can take or a 10 minute video you can watch that will train you to play piano fluently without practice.

But with that said, there are few things more personally rewarding than being able to play piano well. That does not mean that you have the ability to schedule piano concerts at Carnegie Hall, but there is a great deal of personal satisfaction and accomplishment that results from being able to play piano well. It is also a great discipline for you in learning how to read music and allocate your time to learning many of the finer points of playing piano.

Some aspiring pianists simply want to learn to play piano by ear. This can be done but much of your success with this will depend on your ability to learn chords, chord progressions, and how well your “musical ear” can be tuned to recognize and appreciate what you are playing. This also applies to jazz piano, which might seem to be far less sructured but atually does have a structure that once learned, can be a great asset to you.

Beginner piano lessons can help students of all ages feel successful, and help them experience a sense of accomplishment as they master lessons of progressive difficulty. Did you know that children as young as five or six can begin to learn to play the piano? Beginner piano lessons are the fundamental building blocks of those who want to have an understanding of piano playing. The piano is one of the most learned musical instruments.

Beginner Piano Lessons and playing the piano without having someone to teach you can be difficult. It is like gambling your time and effort based on your own knowledge and understanding. Beginner piano lessons teach a child that work is something that can have enjoyable results that make play more fun later on in life. Unfortunately for the parent of a child in beginner piano lessons, there is a time of adjustment when you will have to set the rules on when and for how long practice will be done each day. Beginner piano lessons often times start with children and young adults. Thankfully, there are now easier ways to learn how to play piano.

Piano lessons are for both the beginning piano student and the student who wants to review their skills. Learning to play the piano is great for all ages. Piano lessons for beginners generally focus on small children. Because it is hobby that many parents instill in their children at an early age, it would seem that most beginner piano lessons and subsequent materials where geared towards kids. Piano lessons are held at my home in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Piano lessons can train children with their fine motor skills and their dexterity. Kindergartens and preschoolers can greatly benefit from this while they enjoy the music the piano produces.

Where To Start In Learning To Play Piano

Today’s modern technology allows the aspiring piano player, whether young or old, to use audios and videos to go over lessons, where the student can repeat those lessons as much as they need to in order to understand the concept being presented. Studies have shown that students who learn from audio and visual lessons have a much better retention rate for the material rather than just practicing by rote.

If you want to Learn To Play Piano, you need to make the personal commitment to learn but it is something that you will never regret.

How Will you Learn to Play the Piano?

Is your passion listening to piano music? Would you like to be able to play just like your idols? Are you thinking of taking lessons but you are not sure where to start? It could even be that you have had some lessons but you have given up as it has taken longer than you thought to learn. Lots of other people may well be in your shoes at this moment and only need a push in the right direction.

The Various Ways to Learn the Piano

Before you do anything else, it is essential to know that there are two ways of playing a piano. These are:

1.Chords

2.Note reading

It is a good idea to know what you want to do when playing the piano. If you are happy enough playing music other people have written, all you have to do is learn how to read the notes. However, on the other hand, if you are more creative and you would like to write your own inspiring music, an understanding of chords is a must.

If you want to learn to play the piano fairly fast, it may be a wise choice to take a chord based approach. If you learn the chords on the piano, you can learn the sounds they make and, therefore, make your own music. You can always learn note reading afterwards if you choose.

The Pros and Cons of Learning from a Teacher

Finding a qualified and reliable instructor is the key to having successful lessons while learning to play the piano. You could learn at home or at the instructor’s studio. There are advantages to both, so it all depends on where you would feel most comfortable. A lot of people try to find an instructor that is local to where they live.

When you are looking for an instructor, you will need to have a goal in mind. It could be that you want to play for fun and want to learn how to play from music sheets. However, if you want to be more creative, it may be a good idea to look for instructors that will give you chord based lessons.

If you hire a piano instructor expecting to make your own music and they teach you nothing but reading notes, you will obviously not be able to reach your goal. Make sure that you know exactly what you will be achieving. Otherwise, you could be wasting a lot of money on something that you, basically, do not want. Also, it can be a huge waste of money to learn something that you could learn online for a cheaper price, and it is just as effective.

Learning online

As mentioned earlier, learning online is a lot cheaper than piano lessons and it is just as good. It can be a great benefit to learn online as you can do it in your own time and at your own pace without someone breathing down your neck. It can also help to save time, too, so the benefits are quite good when learning online.

The only real disadvantage with learning online is that a person may not have enough motivation to learn properly. Also, with an instructor, if there is something that doesn’t make sense, they can get help. When you are learning online, it may not make much sense and there is no instructor there to ask for help.

You can also learn how to play the piano with piano learning DVDs and computer software designed to help.

General Guidelines to Learning the Piano

Overall playing the piano should be something that is fun and it should certainly not reduce you to tears all of the time. If you take your time learning and have regular practice you will eventually achieve what you want. You should not give up if it is something that you have wanted to do for a long time. There may be times that you get frustrated, but just keep going and you will be able to play the piano just as good as anyone else can, and even write your own music in time.

The common understanding is that if you want to play the piano, you have to learn to read notes on music sheets and play according to what is indicated on them. You do not need to struggle to search and study music sheets since you can learn to play any song by just listening to it.

Even if you would decide to study how to learn to play piano by ear, you would still need to undergo a certain training such as knowing the right relationships between notes and sounds and you should have a good memory in order to produce and repeat the sounds that you have heard since you won’t be relying too much on notes and the chart.

To get started on how to learn to play piano by ear, all you plainly need to do is to just listen and hear all the parts of the song. After the whole song, play the record again and this time be more particular with the key it is played. Then you would have to play it again and again to listen more to the other notes in the song. You might not get the actual way of playing the song, but still, you would be able to improvise and finally harmonize the whole thing.

If you would wish for your songs to be more similar to the original then you would have to work harder when you study how to learn to play piano by ear. In time, you will be able to hear the right combination and get things the way you want it.
