I’m a starving college student and want to learn the piano. I’d like to look into buying an electronic keyboard, but I’m not familiar with the brands and don’t know what to look for. I don’t need a lot of bells and whistles… All I really want is for it to have 88 keys and a headphone jack so I don’t bother my neighbors. I live in an upstairs apartment, so a regular piano is out of the question.
Any thoughts?
I can’t advise you about keyboards. Go to a music store that sells such things and ask. Go to several. Ask all the questions at each store that you can think of. Take notes. Do research online. Go to the music department at the college you attend and make friends and ask questions. Maybe you could find someone who would want to barter lessons for something else, like housekeeping or word processing or dog walking or something. Maybe you could even actually play a real piano at the music department sometimes, while you’re over there with your new friends, If that doesn’t work, do your research and find a used keyboard in good shape — try the pawnshops. Ask the music stores if they have any used ones. Then buy a beginner’s piano book – ask the staff at the music store for advice there too.
