Tips, Tricks & Piano Playin' Resources

Which is better for my child? Start with basics or trying with simple song?

I’m trying to decide which teacher I should send my daughter to. One of them was a concert pianist and the other is a very very experinced piano teacher. Both of them are very good (according to their students’ parents). One of them starts with simple songs and the other starts with the regular piano course books. Please be kind enough to give me some advice. Thanks a million for any comment.

Songs, songs, songs. No competition.

If your daughter starts learning the basics via scales or random exercises, she will get really bored really quickly. If she starts learning songs, though, she’ll get into it, especially if they’re songs she knows and likes.

My students always start by learning simple songs; only continuing students have the interest and commitment to buckle down and learn scales and theory and the rest of it.
