Question by Lamar: Why is Lady Gaga respected?
This might be a mean question, but I really must know. As a musician, I have no respect for her whatsoever. I acknowledge that she has talent, but she never uses it. Music is my life and it hurts to see that someone like Lady Gaga and not respectable musicians that put forth effort, time and work into their songs, get rated number 1.
Also, I’m tired of these half assed arguments stating she’s good because she got 100+ rewards from places that base their opinion on popularity and NOT musical talent and finesse. It’s basically saying 100+ unqualified authorities rated her good, therefore she’s good. I’ve read her rewards and honestly, if I got any of them, I’d throw them all in the garbage bin right away. MTV? Spike TV? No offense, but since when the heck did they become actual musical experts? They base their opinions almost solely on popularity and not actual skill and creativity.
Now then, when I listen to her songs such as Bad Romance and Poker Face for examination purposes, you can count the time signature. Now, it’s alright that she’s going in common time, 1-2-3-4. But if you count 1-2-3-4 for most of her songs, “Bad Romance”, “Poker Face”, “Boys Boys Boys”, you will see they have the same exact TEMPO too. Not to mention the rhythm being the same thing for most of her songs that are comparable to multiple other songs that are out there which use the same bass structure, same chord progressions, etc… My point? The actual music is generic, simple and the same thing over and over again.
Now, people say “But wait! She can play piano!” So can I, am I suddenly a musical God now? It’s not the fact you can play, it’s HOW you play. I’ve seen her play, she just scales up chords in a way that makes the song try to sound good. I do it all the time myself, but I don’t do it to seem fancy. I do it when APPROPRIATE and make my songs distinct in sound with actual love and care for them. She just throws it out and people are amazed “How’d she do that?!” Easy, she played a chord and arpeggiated it. It really isn’t hard. It’s something a beginner can do. It’s something I could do within a week of learning. After she’s done with that though, she plays her chords in the same exact rythme and gives off no distinctness to her song besides her singing and trying to arpeggiate more.
Now, don’t get me started on her lyrics. She is even repetitive with that. She has to get the words “Ga” in her song somewhere. But that’s not all… It doesn’t even stop there. People act as if by stating something in some of the dumbest way possibles, she is unique because her lyrics are apparently “unique”.
“I want your ugly, I want your disease. I want your everything as long as it’s free, I want your love.”
Now… I want your everything, as long as it’s free… Maybe I’m insane, but how’s that unique? Let alone, ryhme? The lyrics are very uninteresting and talks about stares and things you’d hear in other songs while twisting words around a bit to attempt to make it unique by doing something that people would find peculiar. Now, here are some lyrics I find fantastic by a band called Radiohead.
“I get on the train and I just stand about, now that I don’t think of you… I keep falling over, I keep passing out, when I see a face like you.”
See that? Sure, you at the end makes it rhyme, but I find it very clever nonetheless. I normally hate when someone rhymes two words, but this is exceptional.
Another Lady Gaga song. “Boys boys boys! We like boys in baaaars! Boys boys boys, buys us drinks in baaaaars!”
This is the idea of unique and creative? Buys us drinks in baaaaars? Extending a word long enough (which is very common I notice) in order for it to rhyme?
Now, here’s more lyrics that aren’t so overcomplicated, but in my honest opinion, still great.
“The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky. Are also on the faces of people passing by. I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do? They’re really saying, I love you.”
Straightforward, but beautiful. The song altogether “What A Wonderful World” was beautiful. It had a beautiful orchestration altogether, the amazing violin symphony, the arpeggio on the guitar, the wonderful way the flute comes in for it’s small tidbits and the nice details, the brass instruments that come in gently, the piano part during the middle 8, the beautiful choir singing gently in the backround to give emphasis and just much more. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they’re also beautiful.
You don’t even need to be complex either. Santeria by Sublime only had around 4 instruments (Two Guitars, a bass, and drums). A guitar that was doing scatting, nice basslines, a guitar that was doing some simple but interesting scal
First of all, I’m pretty damned old to be a kid. Also, you gave no legitimate reason whatsoever.
