I know that the normal posture to play piano is with the back straight, leaning slightly forward toward the keyboard. Most of the time when I play the piano I sit appropriately. But a few months ago the bench of the piano at my work (in a restaurant) was damaged. Don’t worry, that didn’t happen when I was sitting so I didn’t fall.
I was obligated to use a common chair provisionally to play the piano. The piano is close to a wall so the backrest of the chair is not very noticed by the public.
Anyway, I keep playing like always do but in some lazy days I rest my back to the backrest, but keeping my back relatively straight. Is very comfortable in those occasions where I don’t need to play my best, just playing easy stuffs as background music. Some of the songs are classical. Most of the time I still play in normal posture (without using the backrest).
My question for all piano players is: Have you ever try to rest your back to a backrest when you are playing piano? Of course I don’t mean in an important occasions (like having a concert); maybe practicing, learning a song at home, etc. You think it should be recommended by piano teachers to do it in some occasions (practicing or learning songs at home), or that’s not reasonable? I’m not a piano teacher, I’m just asking.
I ask because I think it should be something common and normal, and I don’t know anyone that occasionally use a backrest when plays piano at home. Is just me?
By-the-way the bench is still damage because my boss doesn’t care where I sit. And sense I’m comfortable with the chair, there’s no need to spend money (something that my boss like very much) to repair or replace the old bench.
Note: I always choose the best answer so the most interesting answer will have the 10 points.
